Eigenspine: Eigenvector Analysis of Spinal Deformities in Idiopathic Scoliosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we propose the concept of eigenspine, a data analysis scheme useful for quantifying the linear correlation between different measures relevant for describing spinal deformities associated with spinal diseases, such as idiopathic scoliosis. The proposed concept builds upon the use of principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA), where PCA is used to reduce the number of dimensions in the measurement space, thereby providing a regularization of the measurements, and where CCA is used to determine the linear dependence between pair-wise combinations of the different measures. To demonstrate the usefulness of the eigenspine concept, the measures describing position and rotation of the lumbar and the thoracic vertebrae of 22 patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis were analyzed. The analysis showed that the strongest linear relationship is found between the anterior-posterior displacement and the sagittal rotation of the vertebrae, and that a somewhat weaker but still strong correlation is found between the lateral displacement and the frontal rotation of the vertebrae. These results are well in-line with the general understanding of idiopathic scoliosis. Noteworthy though is that the obtained results from the analysis further proposes axial vertebral rotation as a differentiating measure when characterizing idiopathic scoliosis. Apart from analyzing pair-wise linear correlations between different measures, the method is believed to be suitable for finding a maximally descriptive low-dimensional combination of measures describing spinal deformities in idiopathic scoliosis. 1Department of Biomedical Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden 2Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization, Linköping University, Sweden 3Sectra, Linköping, Sweden e-mail: {da-for,cl-lun}@sectra.se,{matsa,knutte}@imt.liu.se Daniel Forsberg, Claes Lundström, Mats Andersson and Hans Knutsson

Eigenspine: Computing the correlation between measures describing vertebral pose for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
This paper describes the concept of eigenspine, a concept applicable for determining the correlation between pair-wise combinations of measures useful for describing the three-dimensional spinal deformities associated with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The proposed data analysis scheme is based upon the use of principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). PCA i...
متن کاملComparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects
Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy indi...

Background: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities with subsequent decrease in pulmonary function. The effects of surgical correction on the pulmonary function of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis are controversial. The purpose of the present study was to compare the postoperative pulmonary function changes in different surgical approaches chosen for its correction. ...
متن کاملThe deformity of idiopathic scoliosis made visible by computer graphics.
We present a method of visualising spinal deformities in three dimensions using conventional radiographs and computer graphics. The shape of the spinal column can be determined from the anteroposterior and lateral radiographs and displayed in any projection. In patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the fundamental lesion, an abnormal lordosis, can be demonstrated without the need for a...
متن کاملComplex congenital scoliosis: brace treatment. What can we expect?
Background Complex Congenital Scoliosis (CCS) is the most frequent cause of non-idiopathic Scoliosis. CCS is a frequent condition in Algeria, and is associated with severe spinal deformities due to failures of formation and segmentation. To date, there is no single treatment that can correct all the deformities in CCS, and the value of Brace Treatment (BT) is still debated. We report our experi...
